Sextant

A sextant is a navigational instrument used to measure the angle between two objects, typically the horizon and a celestial body such as the Sun, Moon, or stars. It is primarily used in maritime navigation and was historically crucial for determining a ship's position at sea.

To use a sextant, the navigator would align the sextant's telescope with the horizon and then adjust the index arm to bring the image of the celestial body into view. By reading the angle indicated on the graduated arc, the observer can determine the altitude of the celestial body above the horizon. This information, combined with accurate timekeeping, enables the calculation of the ship's latitude and longitude through celestial navigation principles.
